One day (hopefully in three years) I hope to join the Peace Corps. First I need to get my BA and my minor (in spanish). Then hopefully I will be sent to Romania, Kenya or Chile. My biggest fears of going? Not disease or war. The food and bugs, seriously. Now some may say “well maybe you shouldn’t join the Peace Corps,” but if that’s what you are thinking then you do not know me at all. I would do anything to help another person. I am not denying that I would celebrate being sent to a place where the food is edible, but if it came down to eat something that I find unpleasant or transform a persons life- I would certainly transform a persons life. Also, I know there will be no gourmet meals, I am simply talking about the cultures where they eat the stomach of an animal right after killing it straight out of the body to thank their god for the food (its in Africa). This would definitely be a challenge for me. The bugs…I already decided that I am bringing a mosquito net. Multiple mosquito nets- and hopefully I am not sent somewhere with foot-long spiders- although as said before I would embrace it and find some way to put my fears aside. Is it wrong that I am more worried about bugs and food rather than disease and war? I just want to help people.
